SpaceX Crew Dragon Flies in Pad Abort Test

A human-sized crash test dummy was seated inside for the test exercise which ended safely with a parachute assisted Atlantic Ocean splashdown after less than two minutes. There were no astronauts aboard.

The SuperDraco engines fired for approximately six seconds and accelerated the crew Dragon “from 0 to 100 mph in 1.2 seconds. It reached a top speed of about 345 mph,” said SpaceX CEO Elon Musk in a post test briefing.

“This bodes quite well for the future of the program. I don’t want to jinx it, but this is really quite a good indication for the future of Dragon.” said Elon Musk.

“We hope to launch the first crews to the ISS within about two years, plus or minus six months.”

The side mounted escape engines mark a revolutionary change from the traditional top mounted launch escape system used previously in the Mercury, Apollo, Soyuz and Orion human spaceflight capsules. The space shuttle had no escape system beyond ejections seats used on the first four flights.

Dragon was mounted atop the finned trunk section for the test. The entire Dragon/trunk assembly was about 20 feet (5 meters) tall.

The test is a critical milestone towards the timely development of the human rated Dragon that NASA is counting on to restore the US capability to launch astronauts from US soil abroad US rockets to the International Space Station (ISS) as early as 2017.

Firefox has an audacious plan to pressure websites to use encryption

Today's servers are a lot faster. Google estimates that using SSL encryption only increases the load on its servers by about 1 percent. So a lack of computing power isn't a good excuse for not using SSL. A lot more websites use the technology today than did a decade ago. Yet there are still a lot of websites that don't use it.

This is why a new announcement from Mozilla is such a big deal. The nonprofit company behind the popular Firefox web browser has decided that the lack of SSL will be treated as a security flaw.

Mozilla is planning to back this determination up with some concrete actions — in the future, non-SSL websites won't have access to security-sensitive features such as your camera.

But the move is also significant from a rhetorical point of view. Until now, SSL has generally been seen as an optional feature — something that's nice to have but not essential if you're not running a bank or e-commerce site. Mozilla is hoping to change the conversation, describing sites that don't support SSL as defective.
 And there's good reason to think this will work. Google, the company behind the industry-leading Chrome browser, is a big SSL supporter. Google is considering taking a similar step with Chrome, and has already started downgrading non-SSL sites in search results.

Ultimately, this is good news for users everywhere. SSL doesn't just protect users from snooping, it also safeguards the integrity of websites, preventing intermediaries from hijacking pages for their own purposes. And with luck, we could soon live in a world where almost every website uses the technology.

AMAZING Night Eruption of Calbuco Volcano in Chile -- Lava, Ash, and Lightning

No one saw this coming. The volcano had been quiet for the last 42 years before erupting twice in the span of a few hours, all with just 15 minutes of warning beforehand. Some 4,000 residents in the nearby town of Puerto Montt and surrounding areas were evacuated. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Nothing breaks up the day like an unexpected volcanic eruption. On April 22, Calbuco in southern Chile erupted in dramatic fashion - sending a massive plume of ash more than 12 miles into the air.

One of the largest historical eruptions in southern Chile took place from Calbuco in 1893-1894.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The Force Awakens is an upcoming American epic space opera film directed by JJ Abrams. The seventh installment in the episodic Star Wars film series, it stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow, with Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker reprising roles from previous films. The story is set approximately 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983).
The Force Awakens is produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Lucasfilm and Abrams' Bad Robot Productions, and will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Second-unit filming began in April 2014 in Abu Dhabi and Iceland, with principal photography taking place between May and November 2014 in Abu Dhabi, Ireland and Pinewood Studios in England. San Bernardino Sheriff's Deputies Caught on Camera Attacking Horse Thief

An alleged horse thief went down in a swarm of San Bernardino Sheriff's deputies Thursday while an NBC helicopter captured the brutal scene from above. NBC reports the cops began chasing the man when he fled the scene of a search warrant-apparently in a Dodge minivan. Eventually he abandoned the car and continued his escape on stolen horseback.

Officers were eventually able to tase him off the horse-and thus commenced a two-minute beatdown so large some officers had to step back to let other officers get a chance to hit and kick the man.

The group surrounding the man grew up to five sheriff's deputies as several appeared to kick, hit, and punch him dozens of times over a two-minute period. In the two minutes after the man was stunned with a Taser, it appeared deputies kicked him 12 times and punched him 29 times. Eleven blows appeared to be to the head as seen from aerial footage. The allegedly stolen horse stood idly nearby.
After the frenzy subsided, the man reportedly lay still, without any medical attention, for more than half an hour. A sheriff's spokesperson tells NBC two officers were treated for dehydration and one may have been kicked by the horse.
